Additional Studies at The Clarendon College
At The Clarendon College we consider exam success and good results of paramount importance. We also believe that Sixth Formers should be prepared for life in as many other ways as possible, and we therefore encourage all students to develop skills and qualities beyond their academic courses.
All Sixth Formers follow a tutorial programme which develops study skills and an understanding of the learning process. Students are kept up to date in health and political issues. The programme also enables students to consider topics outside their academic courses. In conjunction with the tutorial programme, students consider their career options and can apply for and complete an industrial placement.
First Year Sixth Form students with appropriate academic ability will follow a course in Critical Thinking which will underpin the skills required across the post-16 curriculum and allow students to gain an extra AS Level qualification if they choose to sit the examination. In 2008 – 9 we will be piloting a GCE AS Level in Citizenship. 1 group will run with limited places offered to students on the basis of GCSE results.
All First Year Sixth Form students are expected to perform at least one hour per week of Community Action. A diverse range of opportunities exist from primary school assistance, to working with the elderly or disabled or offering classroom support at Clarendon or other local schools.
Many Sixth Formers take up the opportunity of becoming involved in the Sixth Form peer mentoring scheme, which develops counselling and listening skills as well as making a valuable contribution to school life.
During the week there are PE sessions available for Sixth Formers with the opportunity to follow a range of Physical Education courses. Some of these courses lead to qualifications such as the Community Sports Leader Award or Life-Saving certification. Other activities result in fixtures whilst there are also recreational opportunities, for example, making the most of the excellent swimming pool facilities. Students can apply to become part of the Senior Student Team. They can also represent their peers on the Sixth Form Committee.
There are many opportunities for students to experience university open days, employment fairs and Careers/Higher education conferences.
Through all of these opportunities, Sixth Formers can gain a range of experience to complement their academic studies.
