History of Art
Centre
John of Gaunt School
Content
Do you love looking at and talking about Art? Do you have favourite artists? Do you ever argue about what the point of Art is? Do you spend time looking round Art galleries or reading about Art? Do you enjoy research? Do you have your own opinions? Do you enjoy expressing your views?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above, you should enrol for the A Level Art History course at John of Gaunt. You do not need to be a talented artist to take this largely written and research-based course.
You will learn skills that will help you extract meaning from Art, and use discussion to encourage breadth of opinion. You will be given one-to-one guidance to help you write engaging essays on Art based topics of your choice. You will learn skills that will help you present this study in a creative way.
The course comprises one written assignment and an externally set examination assignment.
Special Features
There is a studio exclusively for Sixth Form use, a Sixth Form Resources Centre (including an Art library, computers and a video library), and a brand new Art gallery. We run gallery visits to London in the autumn term and to Europe in the spring term.
Entry
You will need at least 5 A*-C GCSEs.
Attendance
One year to AS, plus one further year to complete A2 to full A Level.

The AS award comprises a practical coursework project and an examination project. The A2 course is another practical coursework project including an illustrated essay on an Art based topic of your choice, and an examination project.
