Building on the reading experience you have gained during your GCSE studies, this popular course will open up a world of new literature and experience. You will study some post-1990 novels as well as a range of plays and poetry. You will be able to develop expertise in a specialist study of literary genre and will be encouraged to develop your own independent reading. The course is a wonderful opportunity simply to enjoy reading and discussing high quality literature.
Special Features
You will often have the opportunity to see one of your plays performed live in the theatre, and to attend study days where you may meet other students who have read your texts and who are excited about literature. For many years The John of Gaunt School has hosted a series of English conferences in March when principal and senior examiners from the AQA offer their advice and guide you in the art of doing your best in the summer exams.
Entry
You will need at least 5 A*-C GCSEs.
Attendance
One year to AS plus one further year to complete the full A Level.
Assessment
This is through a combination of coursework and examinations in both years.
Moving on
English Literature is one of the most highly regarded of all A Levels and is welcomed by universities, colleges and employers. In particular it may help you if you wish to study any creative subject such as Drama or Media Studies. English, however, has always been a valued subject and this A Level will help you towards just about any career that you have in mind.
