Content
Physics forms the basis of most modern technologies and is the key to future global well-being.
Physics is the study of the laws that govern the physical world. It tries to understand the nature of basic things such as motion, forces, energy, matter, heat, sound and light. These are found throughout the universe, and so physicists study a wide range of topics. You might find a physicist smashing atomic particles together to find out how the universe began or you might find a physicist orbiting the Earth as an astronaut. Physicists also work in hospitals, designing new instruments or scanning techniques. Some physicists even create smaller and faster electronics for the next generation of computers.
Special Features
AS and A Level in physics encourages students to:
- study how scientific models develop;
- appreciate how Physics has developed and is used in present-day society;
- develop essential knowledge and understanding of Physics and, where appropriate, the applications of Physics and their implications for present-day society;
- demonstrate the importance of Physics as a human endeavour which interacts with social, philosophical, economic and industrial matters;
- develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment;
- develop essential knowledge and understanding in Physics and, where appropriate, the applications of Physics, and the skills needed for the use of this in new and changing situations;
- recognise the quantitative nature of Physics and understand how mathematical expressions relate to physical principles;
- sustain and develop their enjoyment of, and interest in, Physics;
- bring together knowledge of ways in which different areas of Physics relate to each other.
Entry
You will need at least 5 A*-C GCSEs.
Attendance
One year to AS, plus one further year to complete A2 to full A Level.
Assessment
This is through a combination of exam board assessed and centre assessed coursework and examinations.
Moving on
The applications, like career opportunities, are infinite. Employers today seek out people who can prove their ability to think logically, understand complex ideas and apply them to the real world. Whether you want to pursue a career in Science, the Media, Education, Business or a host of other fields, Physics can give you the edge.
