Expectations

Students are expected to follow 4 AS Level courses or their equivalent to qualify as a full time student; we do not have a part time offer.

Settling In

Once a student has started their courses we allow a 2 week grace period during which staff and students are expected to ensure that students have chosen their courses wisely in a sensible package blending their strengths with the new learning required of Sixth Form students.

We expect Sixth Form students to take an increasingly independent approach to learning and run a Probationary Period from September until December for all Year 12 students. During this time attendance, aptitude, conduct, ability to meet deadlines and academic progress are all reported on by subject staff. We will withdraw our offer if individual students do not meet our baseline requirements during this period.

Dress Code

Following on from the above, we expect students to arrive suitably dressed for study - which to our eyes is not the same as dressing for the beach or a night out. Likewise we would ask that students do not display facial or body piercings while they study with us.

Community Action

The academic year is now divided into 6 terms and during terms 2, 3 and 4 The Clarendon College expect their Year 12 students to take part in a programme of Community Action. This could be supporting classes in the lower school, working at a primary school or voluntarily helping suitable organisations in the wider community: the expected commitment is a minimum of one hour per week. At The John of Gaunt School it is expected that you will do this throughout Year 12.

Attendance

A minimum of 90% attendance is expected from all students. For The Clarendon College students, attendance includes a daily morning registration with tutors and one assembly and one tutor period per week. For The John of Gaunt students, attendance includes daily afternoon registration with tutors, one assembly per week and our PSHE sessions.

Paid Employment

Although we accept that young people will undertake paid employment alongside study, we subscribe to the research carried out at the University of Nottingham - amongst other centres - which indicates that time in excess of 10 paid hours per week has a detrimental effect on the grades achieved by students. For this reason we recommend a maximum of 10 hours per week paid employment alongside study.
